Description
Thyme is more than just a spice or a familiar ingredient in childhood teas. It is a sun-kissed plant that embodies peace, gentleness, care and lightness.
In ancient Greece, thyme symbolized courage and strength — soldiers bathed in thyme-infused water before battle, believing it would bring them bravery. The Romans burned thyme in temples as an offering to the gods, and its scent was considered a symbol of holiness and purification. Even Hippocrates, the father of medicine, praised thyme in his writings for its healing properties and support for emotional well-being.
Nowadays, the mild linalool chemotype of thyme is especially valued in aromatherapy for its calming, subtly refreshing aroma. The best essential oils are derived from thyme grown in warm, sunny regions such as Spain, France, Tunisia, Morocco and Italy. The dry climate and gravelly soil in these areas produce high-quality plants rich in therapeutic compounds.
Thyme essential oil is extracted by steam distillation from the flowering tops, harvested in early to mid-summer — typically June or July. The plants are gathered early in the morning, once the dew has dried but before the sun reaches its peak, to capture the fullest and most stable aroma. Only the most fragrant parts of the plant — flowers, upper leaves, and stem tips — are used in the distillation process, which takes several hours and yields a delicate, herbal, and uplifting oil.
Thyme essential oil is perfect for refreshing your home, supporting breathing rituals, or enhancing moments of creativity. More than just a scent, it’s a sensory experience that brings calm, comfort, and quiet strength into your daily rhythm.
How to use?
Diffusion:
Diffuse thyme essential oil in an electric diffuser to purify and scent the air in your space. During the day, add 6–8 drops to the diffuser; for nighttime use, add 3–4 drops.
We recommend trying a blend of thyme (4 drops) and rosewood (4 drops) in your diffuser. Thyme (3 drops) and lemon (5 drops) also create a wonderful synergy. Another great combination is thyme (4 drops) with eucalyptus radiata (4 drops).
Body care:
For a massage oil, mix 3–4 drops of thyme essential oil into a teaspoon of a carrier oil (e.g., sweet almond oil). Suitable for children over 2 years old and the whole family. Please note: oil-based products should not be used during a fever!
For thinning, weak, or slow-growing hair, prepare a hair mask: mix 50 ml camellia oil + 15 drops rosemary essential oil + 15 drops thyme essential oil. Massage the oil mixture vigorously into the scalp and hair roots, cover with a shower cap, leave for 15–20 minutes, then wash your hair as usual. Repeat this treatment at least twice a week. This mask stimulates circulation, increasing oxygen and nutrient delivery to hair follicles. Over time, hair becomes stronger, sheds less, and grows faster!
Prepare a warming aromatherapy bath with thyme essential oil. Add 3 drops of thyme essential oil into a carrier oil and then pour the mixture into the bathwater (thyme pairs well with rosewood and pine). Do not take a bath if you have a fever! Baths with thyme essential oil are not suitable for people with sensitive skin!
Home care:
Bring extra freshness and cleanliness to your home! Add 10 drops of thyme essential oil to a bucket of cold water, dampen a cloth with this water, and wipe furniture surfaces and floors. This is especially useful for households with small children who frequently play on the floor.
Thyme is wonderful in the sauna! Pour warm water into a metal bowl, add 25–30 drops of essential oils, and place the bowl in the warmest corner of the sauna. The aroma of essential oils will quickly fill the sauna and pamper your respiratory system. We recommend trying thyme with eucalyptus radiata or thyme with rosemary.
